The Brand Shoot Prep Mistakes That Could Ruin Your Photos

You’ve booked a brand shoot. You’re investing in visuals that represent your business at its best.

But then… something doesn’t quite work.Your hair doesn’t feel right. Your makeup looks great in the mirror but not so much on camera. You packed four outfits but none of them feel like you. Sound familiar?

These are the brand shoot prep mistakes I see all the time  and they’re totally avoidable with a little planning.

Here’s what I recommend:

1. Don’t leave your outfits to chance

The biggest mistake? Throwing random outfits in a bag and hoping for the best. Choose clothes that not only fit your brand colours and style, but that you actually like wearing.

You want to feel confident and comfortable and not like you’re playing dress-up.

2. Hair and makeup need a plan too

You don’t need a full glam squad (unless that’s your thing), but you do want to feel polished. If you’re doing your own makeup, test it in natural light and in front of the camera.

Your usual look might not translate the same on camera… shine, colour balance and definition can all change. And if you’re having your hair done, don’t try something completely new on the day. Stick to what feels most like you.

3. Choosing the wrong location

A gorgeous building doesn’t always equal great photos. I’ve shot in dreamy-looking venues with awful lighting and cluttered backdrops. Think about the feeling you want to create  – modern and minimal? Soft and romantic? Bold and creative?

Your location should reflect your brand and support great lighting (natural is ideal, but controlled studio lighting works wonders too).

4. Not asking questions before the shoot

Brand shoot prep mistakes often come down to not knowing what to expect. Always ask your photographer about things like posing, props, timing and locations.

A good one (hi, it’s me) will walk you through every step.

You don’t have to figure it out alone. To be honest, most brand shoot prep mistakes come from not knowing what matters most.

But these little details?

They’re not so little when they affect how you feel in your photos. So if you’re planning a shoot soon, take the time to prep properly. Your future self (and your website) will thank you.
