How to Prepare for a B-roll Video Shoot: A Guide for Female Business Owners
As a female business owner, participating in a B-roll video shoot can be a powerful way to elevate your brand’s story.
B-roll footage, usually those candid and supplemental or behind the scenes videos, that add depth and context to your social media content.
Here are some essential tips to help you prepare for your next B-roll video shoot and ensure it captures the essence of your business.
Understand the Role of B-roll in Your Brand Story
B-roll isn’t just filler footage; it’s a critical storytelling tool.
Understand how the B-roll will complement your main footage. Will it showcase your products, highlight your services, or provide a glimpse into your day-to-day business operations? This understanding will guide you in preparing appropriately for the shoot.
Collaborate on the Shot List
Work with your videographer to develop a shot list for your B-roll video shoot. This list should include:
- Important aspects of your business that you want to highlight.
- Showcasing your workspace, your team in action, or your products being used.
- Behind the scenes videos of you showing your personality.
- Close up videos that are aesthetic and can be used
I’ve found that watching Instagram reels can be great inspiration. Create a folder and save any you’d like to try. Or check out this recent post where I share some ideas for b-rolls.
Choose a location
If the B-roll video shoot is happening at your business premises, ensure your space is tidy and visually appealing. Inform your team about the shoot so they can be prepared, both in terms of appearance and in understanding the importance of the footage being captured.
If you’re thinking about going to a busy location (a town centre or local café) bear in mind that other people could be in your video’s. Plus are you comfortable doing this amongst strangers?
Think about the aesthetic of your brand, your branding photos and website and what would work.
Dress for Success
Choose an outfit that reflects your brand’s style and makes you feel confident.
Remember, the camera can amplify certain colours and patterns, so opt for attire that looks good on screen.
Does the weather make a difference to what you’re wearing? Do you want the videos to be obviously a certain season?
B-roll footage often includes candid shots, so it’s important to act naturally. Don’t worry about performing for the camera. Just be yourself, and let the videographer capture the essence of your business and your role within it.
A B-roll video shoot is a fantastic opportunity to bring your business’s story to life. By preparing adequately, collaborating with your videographer, and just being YOU, you can make sure that the B-roll really complements your brand and appeals to your audience.
