What I’m reading in September 2023

I’ve had a really strange year.

I’ve been on holiday 3 times (when usually it’s just the once) so I’ve found myself reading even more than usual. And that’s saying something considering I read every day and usually get through about 70 books a year.

My poor fuzzy sun soaked brain needed something a bit more useful than fiction now that everyone seems to be getting in touch about shoots

I always feel like September is a better start of a new year than January so reading some of these business books just came at the right time. Plus I’m working with a new coach to sort out some of my packages.

It’s been about 4 years since I looked at them and whether they’re actually what people want… so watch this space.

Anyway, on to the books:

The Diary of a CEO – The 33 rules of Business and life – Steven Bartlett

I’m going to be honest, I thought his first book Happy Sexy Millionaire was utter drivel. Just a self indulgent recap on a very successful (stupidly young) businessman’s life. When he got to the parts where he talked about relationships I cringed.

But…

This new book is actually pretty good. Yeah there were a few chapters that weren’t particularly relevant to me but on the whole, it was interesting and had some good take-aways. Certainly made me think about things I hadn’t thought of (like embracing my weirdness 😂).

It’s an easy read and if you enjoy his podcast it has some really good stories in it too.

Chill & Prosper – Denise Duffield Thomas

I’m admittedly a bit late to the party on this one. I bought it when it first came out last summer and completely forgot I had it (that happens a lot when you’re a book hoarder – even though I switched to digital…)

Can you believe I found myself actually taking notes.

I think I had expected it to be one of those books that tell you that everyone can work 4 hours a week and earn millions. While sitting in Bali working on my tan…

It wasn’t like that at all.

The mindset bit was really good and then business and marketing sections will actually have an impact on how I do things.

You know that feeling where you know that there must be an easier way – but you don’t know what it is… get the book!!

  • Plus if you like this one, she’s written a few others that are great too!

Everybody Writes – Ann Handley

If you’re a copywriter I’m pretty sure you’ll have heard of this one and be going “der… that’s been out for years”.

But this is the new updated version.

If you’ve got a book in you, you write blog posts, social media or newsletters then it’s a really good practical book.

But it’s not dry at all. I found myself laughing out loud… yep… reading a book about writing and finding it funny!

So definitely try this one too.

I honestly love business books (when they’re good 😂) – so if you have any recommendations – honestly just drop me a message!

And when you’re ready, here are three ways that I can help you:

Hi There!

Meet Maryanne

I’m a 40 (ahem something…) year old Yorkshire woman.

I’ve been self employed for 10 years (and a photographer for 18) and I totally understand how difficult it is to be visible in business.

Whether that’s because of a lack of self confidence, feeling a bit frumpy or the physical side effects of peri-menopause (hot sweats and forgetfulness anyone) – I promise you I’ve seen it all and still get great photos at every photoshoot.

I honestly feel so honoured when people book me, because they believe that I really want the best outcome for you. There’s no point having a fancy photoshoot if it doesn’t feel authentic to you.

My aim for every shoot is to get photos and video that you actually want to share… and I’ll be there in the side lines cheering you on!
