Doing a magazine photoshoot has been on my bucket list for ages. Along with a brand shoot in Paris and headshots of Ryan Reynolds.
But it’s one of those things that I didn’t really expect to happen, considering I usually work with business owners and entrepreneurs.
So when Julia Cross of Eat and Green PR got in touch to see if I’d be interested – you can imagine my response.
My only issues were:
1. I was really nervous. Photoshoots don’t generally make me nervous but I really didn’t want to embarrass myself 😂 by saying something stupid (it has been known…).
2. We had a limited amount of time because of the light and the fact that I had my Visibility School shoots that day.
On the day
On the day itself I met up with Julia (who is also editor of Free From Living Magazine) beforehand to have a last minute check around.
Even though I’ve done photos at Leeds Dock on dozens of occasions, I hadn’t done it so late in the afternoon. And I had a real concern about the light. In December the light can drop quite dramatically after about 2.30pm – and we weren’t shooting until 3pm.
Thankfully it turned out to be one of those crisp, sunny winter days so the light was amazing.
They brought Steph up to meet me (we did it a cute little bar/restaurant called Canary Bar on Leeds Dock) and immediately I felt the nerves. I honestly don’t remember what i was saying but I do remember thinking… “what on earth are you talking about… she’s going to think you’re an idiot”.
Thankfully it got better after I had a word with myself. It turns out that she’s as lovely as she seems on TV. Very genuine and doesn’t like having her photo taken as much as we don’t!
And here are a few from the shoot!
For most of us, we’re unlikely to be the cover star of a magazine, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t need good photos if you’re featured in a magazine.
Here are some photos you can get at your next Branding Photoshoot so you’re ready when that next PR opportunity lands!
Hero image
This is a photo where you’re in a power pose – where you look strong and confident. You’re looking directly at the camera and you’re open and poised.
Behind the scenes
This type of photo shows you working. Whether you’re sat at a laptop in your kitchen, at your desk or maybe sat with a client.
Headshot
You’ll need a simple headshot (shoulders and head) for a profile photo on a by-line or at the end of a guest blog post. Choose a colourful background and you’ll stand out.
