Brand photography has seen definite change over the last 2 years which has led to 5 new trends in brand photography in 2022.
In 2020 I saw more laid back shoots, with people opting to wear more lounge wear, and then last year it seemed to go the other way. Shoots in fancy houses were in demand with people wanting a more polished look.
This year I’m finding the following is really popular
Darker images
Edgier and darker photos are making a come back, with more shadows and dark opulent settings.
There also seem to be more shoot locations that are opting for darker shades of interior design too so that’s definitely having an effect on branding shoots.
2 years ago, the houses I was hiring had white bright kitchens, but now navy blue seems to be the most popular colour. With living rooms going darker too.
Picking out specific colours in bw photos
I have a serious love/hate feeling about these types of photos.
Back in 2006 (and prior to that) when I first started my photography journey they were all the rage. You’d see wedding photos where everything was black and white except the flowers or certain colours would be colourised in a photo. But then it became old fashioned.
And photographers who were still doing it became old fashioned.
So you can image my surprise when I’ve been asked to do it on a number of occasions recently.
Still not sure if i like it…time will tell. (and can’t bring myself to share one of my own 🤣 – I know… I’m a photo snob)
Moving photos
These are like gif’s but with better image quality.
They’re being used on websites in headers and in the body of the text on quite a few websites I’ve see recently (and I’m being asked to create them more often now too).
Basically they’re just a serious of photos played quickly in a video. You can also remove the background in photoshop or Canva, apply a transparent background and then use it anywhere you like, even over other things.
Just like this one!
Unique tones and matte images.Â
There are lots of really great examples of this on Instagram where people go for a more brown overall tone or even blue. Its changes the feel of an image and often (done in the right way) gives more interest to the image.
It doesn’t always work so well on phone images because they’re not always good quality high resolution images. And it can be especially bad when people use that sort of a filter to improve a poor photo – hoping that the filter will make it better.
Quirky backdrops
People are avoiding the white kitchen, millionaire lifestyle type locations in favour of quirky interiors.
With lots of style unusual choices, colour and unique accessories.Â
Like this shoot at Norfolk House in Huddersfield. The décor is completely over the top wonderful. Full of bright colours, unusual furniture and pretty accessories.
