How to do an outfit change outdoors without showing everyone your underwear

How to do an outfit change outdoors without showing everyone your underwear.

It might seem like such an insignificant thing…but mastering a quick and discreet change of outfit at your shoot (when we don’t have access to a changing room) is pretty important if you don’t want to flash your pants to half of Leeds.

On the whole, most shoots don’t have this problem. If your shoot is at home, at a Branding Day or in a café or Restaurant then we’ll have access to toilets or a changing room.

If we opt for a shoot outdoors (in a field, or maybe in a remote part of a city centre) where finding some facilities is a bit more tricky then it might be helpful to think about how to do an outfit change outdoors.

Don’t be put off by the thought of it… you don’t actually need to change at all if you bring layers…but if you really want to… try one of these options…

Wear a vest

Not just because they keep you warm and your mum always told you to wear one, but because it covers your underwear (or your chest) and allows you to quickly change your top without showing your bra…

I have a client on Visibility school who always wears legging under her dresses so she can do a quick outfit change outdoors.

Wear layers

And no, I don’t mean you should wear everything you intend to use at the shoot like that episode of Friends, where Joey wears all of chandlers clothes.

But perhaps wearing a t-shirt under your jumper will make it a little easier. Or knowing that you have a jacket, a jumper, a t-shirt that will all give a slightly different look to the shoot.

Bring a blanket or beach towel

Did you ever have to do one of those quick changes at the beach when you were a kid? Where your mum just held up a towel and expected you to strip off your swim suit (but she was always distracted by your sister so she ended up flashing your arse to the whole beach?) – no me neither 😁.

Well, for this to work you just need a huge blanket, a quiet corner and obviously me shielding your dignity!

Wear your big coat

Last winter I bought one of those enormous quilt jackets… its 3/4 length and absolutely huge (Andrew insists I look like a football manager🙄) . But it was brilliant for shielding quick changes.

Consider a Changing tent

If you really want to use a more remote location, then a pop-up changing tent could be a great investment (and they’re only about £20 on amazon) and give you the privacy you need when you do your outfit change outdoors.

Todays post was definitely a bit tongue in cheek, but its something to consider if you’re wanting to change when we’re outside.

And when you’re ready, here are three ways that I can help you:

1) Visit my blog for tips on VISIBILITY.

Every week I discuss strategies to improve your visibility, get over your fear of visibility and my latest shoots.  Read here

2) Plan a bespoke photoshoot.

We can plan a shoot based on what you actually need (read more) or you could join me at a Branding Day.

Hi There!

Meet Maryanne

I’m a 40 (ahem something…) year old Yorkshire woman.

I’ve been self employed for 10 years (and a photographer for 18) and I totally understand how difficult it is to be visible in business.

Whether that’s because of a lack of self confidence, feeling a bit frumpy or the physical side effects of peri-menopause (hot sweats and forgetfulness anyone) – I promise you I’ve seen it all and still get great photos at every photoshoot.

I honestly feel so honoured when people book me, because they believe that I really want the best outcome for you. There’s no point having a fancy photoshoot if it doesn’t feel authentic to you.

My aim for every shoot is to get photos and video that you actually want to share… and I’ll be there in the side lines cheering you on!
