How much photoshop is too much photoshop?

Ok, so how much photoshop is too much photoshop?

Whats acceptable to one person is definitely not the same for someone else…

We see in the news quite regularly, people speaking out about magazines and newspapers photoshopping without permission and the ridiculous standards of beauty that society seems to insist on.

But then there’s little old me.

Photographing business women, mums who have a side business, women who aren’t models, women over the age of 40 (rarely seen in magazines).

Just real women doing their best to earn a living in an increasingly digital world.

So it is wrong for me to photoshop their photos?

I don’t think so but I actually have a few rules… these the things I will definitely photoshop if I need to (or where I’m asked to).

  1. Dark circles under eyes
  2. Spots & blemishes
  3. Distracting backgrounds
  4. Wardrobe mishaps
  5. Colours (where they look odd)
  6. Bruises and cuts
  7. Damaged/stained teeth
  8. Dark roots.

But these are quite minor things. They don’t change the photo into something unrecognisable.

Do you want to be unrecognisable?

So maybe you decided you’d like fully retouching.

Getting rid of all wrinkles, laughter lines, spots, dark circles, we shrink your body and you look fab-u-lous… And about 15 years younger.

But when anyone meets you in person they’re either going to wonder how long ago you had the photos, or they’re going to not recognise you at all.

In fact what’s the point in being more visible if no-one can actually recognise you?

When skin softening makes you look like an alien?

For some people who’ve had bad acne scarring then I could totally understand why you’d want me to do this. But its like everything. Where do you stop?

As some point the softening also softens your features too. And it looks unreal. Certainly if you plan on meeting real actual people in person then they’ll probably notice.

So… I’d say that I love photoshop because it can really make a photo “pop”…but am I going to make you look 15 years younger? I think you get the point!

Hi There!

Meet Maryanne

I’m a 40 (ahem something…) year old Yorkshire woman.

I’ve been self employed for 10 years (and a photographer for 18) and I totally understand how difficult it is to be visible in business.

Whether that’s because of a lack of self confidence, feeling a bit frumpy or the physical side effects of peri-menopause (hot sweats and forgetfulness anyone) – I promise you I’ve seen it all and still get great photos at every photoshoot.

I honestly feel so honoured when people book me, because they believe that I really want the best outcome for you. There’s no point having a fancy photoshoot if it doesn’t feel authentic to you.

My aim for every shoot is to get photos and video that you actually want to share… and I’ll be there in the side lines cheering you on!
